For purposes of uniformity, starting with USP 39–NF 34 print and online editions, General Chapters will begin to appear with a standardized format for the headers. This format change does not affect the content. Below is an outline of the new header hierarchy style. A list of reformatted chapters can be found here.

A general chapter cross reference has the following format:
Title <###>
A cross reference to a section within a general chapter has the following format:
Title <###>, Section
A cross reference to a subsection within a general chapter has the following format:
Title <###>, Section, Subsection
